Many
consider Agatha Christie the grand dame of Mysteries for her clever,
complex plots. Fortunately, she also laid the foundation for the "fair
play" mystery: No clues are hidden from the reader, so with careful
attention it is possible to solve the mystery. Her characters most
famously include Hercule Poirot and Miss Jane Marple. Typical of the
Cozy Mystery genre, violence, forensic details, and other intimate
encounters occur off-stage; a clear resolution occurs; and justice
usually prevails. Start with: The Murder at the Vicarage.
Hercule Poirot,
one of the world's most famous fictional detectives, is retired with
honors from the Belgian Police force when we first meet him in The Mysterious Affair at Styles.
After successfully solving that mystery, he sets up practice as a
private detective in London. Christie wrote more than 30 novels
featuring the eccentric, insightful, and somewhat arrogant detective.
The Mystery of the Blue Train (1928)
The
night train to the Mediterranean is stopped by the disappearance of a
legendary cursed jewel. When the heiress who owns the jewel is found
murdered, Hercule Poirot must solve the mystery.
