In On, Off, published in 2006, a psychopathic serial killer is preying on young, mixed-race women in 1965 Connecticut, and police lieutenant Carmine Delmonico is charged with finding the identity of the murderer. He suspects the killer may work at a local neurological research institute, but he only uncovers revealing information after depleting all his options. Reviews were mostly positive for McCullough's crime thriller. Pat Dole, writing in Kliatt, easily identified McCullough's strong writing potential, noting that her "skill in developing fully fleshed characters is abundantly evident." Booklist contributor David Pitt also wrote that "the characters are vividly drawn, and the story itself is quite intriguing." Pitt commented, however, that her excessive use of exclamation points "is sure to grate on many readers." A contributor to Kirkus Reviews remarked that the author "has achieved a passably engrossing police procedural."
